FAQs

Heat shrink tubing is an element found in most electrical setups, which insulates your wires, protects them from external factors (such as dust and moisture) and binds otherwise loose wires, connectors, joints, terminals and splices together.

When exposed to heat, the tubing placed around your electrical components and wires collapses to fit the equipment’s contours – creating a protective layer.

To create heat shrink tubing, manufacturers first use extrusion to make a tube of thermoplastic material. The materials used vary depending on the intended application, but ours at Flex It are made with polyolefin.

Once extruded, it is heated and forced to expand – increasing the tube’s diameter and then set aside to cool to room temperature and set.

The expanded tube is then placed around the wires and heated to a specific temperature, which causes it to soften and shrink back to its original size – effectively enclosing your wires and other electrical components within a tight protective layer.

Polyolefin shrink tubing is much more popular than its PVC counterpart, and with good reason.

Polyolefin offers excellent thermal resistance and can withstand temperatures as high as 125-135°C – which makes it ideal for all sorts of industrial, mechanical and manufacturing applications.

There are also adhesive-lined polyolefin options available, which provide a secure, non-slip tube for your cables and offer increased support and protection for your electrical components in the harshest conditions.
