FAQ's
When it comes to the protection of wires, there are two types of conduit you could opt for: rigid conduit or flexible conduit. Flexible conduit is by far the most popular though, as it provides unrivalled durability and is often a more stable cable conduit when used in tight areas.
Flexible conduit can be used anywhere where there is a high volume of cables with the key use for it being to both protect and organise cables in a convenient way. Other benefits of opting for flexible conduit include:
- Improve appearance
- Convenient
- Stable
- Durable
- Affordable
- Versatile
You can get flexible conduit in a huge range of materials depending on your specific needs, including steel, polypropylene and liquid tight metallic.
You may be surprised to know that flexible conduit can be used pretty much everywhere, however it is most commonly found where rigid conduit wiring is unsuitable due to the area being small, tight or awkward i.e. basements, attics and crawlspaces.
Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of our extensive range of flexible conduit is that it can be used both indoors and out. They are most often utilised in or around commercial buildings but can also be used domestically.
The length of flexible conduit can vary depending on what you’re using it for, however generally speaking you can obtain cable conduit in any size. There are guidelines in place across certain sectors to ensure flexible conduit doesn’t exceed safe lengths, for instance the maximum length for grounding is 6 feet.
If you’re unsure what type and length of conduit wiring to opt for, contact our team who would be more than happy to advise you.
Flexible conduit is so versatile thanks to its range of materials, which include:
- Galvanised stainless steel
- PVC covered steel
- Low smoke zero halogen covered steel
- Liquid tight metallic
- PVC
- Extra HD PVC
- PA6 Nylon
- Polypropylene
There are four main types of flexible conduits:
- Flexible Metallic Conduit (FMC) – usually made from either aluminium or steel FMC is commonly used where a thin-walled electrical metallic could pose a risk.
- Liquidtight Metallic Tubing (LMT) – water-resistant, LMT is ideal for use outdoors where exposure to the elements is more likely.
- Flexible Metallic Tubing (FMT) – great for use in ceilings, lofts or in lighting where wiring is in situ high up. FMT is not covered by any kind of jacket and can stop smoke from leaking out.
- Liquidtight Flexible Nonmetallic Conduit (LFNC) – Flame-resistant and water-resistant, LFNC is the safest and most versatile flexible conduit available. It can be utilised in most conditions.
If you’re unsure which cable conduit is most suited to your needs, contact our team who would be more than happy to advise.
Yes – although not every type of cable conduit will be suitable for outdoor use, there are plenty in our range that can be used safely outdoors and will protect your wiring against the harsh elements.
