What is a metallic flexible conduit?

Metallic flexible conduits protect cables against water, vibration, oil and various other corrosive materials. Their flexibility comes from the formed strip design which produces a strong square-lock construction, this comes in useful for applications where a rigid conduit would require lots of fittings.

A metallic flexible conduit provides the same level of protection as its rigid counterparts but isn’t confined to travel in a straight line. It’s more versatile and can bend and twist in almost any direction – allowing turns at corners and reducing the need for elbow joints.

This type of conduit has a high-temperature version in SS-Series Stainless Steel Range which is ideal for high-temperature and corrosive environments and areas that require additional strength and support. When compared to non-metallic conduits, often made from PVC or polypropylene, metallic flexible conduits are often constructed from a steel base material and are ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Buy metallic flexible conduits

Here at Flex-It, we have a wide selection of metallic flexible conduits available for you to choose from, including the C-Series, F-Series, and SS-Series.

All our conduits are supplied in a wide range of trade sizes, internal and external diameters, coil sizes and with a different bending radius.

The B-Series Plain Galvanised Steel Range is ideal for underfloor heating systems and other applications where continuous flexing is required. If you’re looking for a liquid-tight flexible metal conduit for demanding environments – be it lighting, communication, air conditioning systems or fire alarm systems, our D-Series Liquid-Tight PVC Covered Steel Range is a fantastic choice. Offering excellent mechanical strength, this type of flexible metal conduit is perfect for machining, processing and handling environments.

To complement our range of metallic flexible conduits, we also supply a choice of fixed, straight, swivel, elbow and plain hole fittings – making it easy for you to secure conduits. Conduit accessories including clips, locknuts, elbow adapters and washers are available when required too.

Metallic Flexible Conduits FAQ’s

The truth is, flexible metal conduits can be used almost anywhere – thanks to their spiral construction and ability to snake through walls and various other structures.

Although jacketed conduits are are typically used for outdoor applications, to protect against damage and to ensure cables are properly encased, they can also be used internally.

Here at Flex-It, we have a comprehensive range of flexible metal conduits available for you to choose from. Within this collection, you’ll find the liquid-tight flexible metal conduit or D-Series which makes for an excellent choice in demanding environments. It features a plastic coating on the outside and sealed fittings so it’s watertight.

To find out more about the uses of flexible metal conduits, send us an online message today.

Flexible conduits are often used by industries, such as factory automation, food and pharmaceutical, infrastructure, marine and defence, OEM machine building, oil and gas, power, steel and more.

They are renowned for their outstanding quality and durability and competitive pricing is guaranteed at Flex-It. But that’s not all.

When you buy a metallic flexible conduit, you instantly benefit from:

  • Chemical resistance
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Excellent bending radius
  • Mechanical protection
  • Resistance to oil and grease
  • Suitable for use in hazardous environments
  • UV resistance
  • Vandalism protection

All conduits offer fire protection to a certain degree and shield your wires from accidental fire damage. However, it’s worth noting that metallic flexible conduits will do a much better job than PVC conduits.

The cost of conduit depends on several factors, including the type of conduit and the material from which it is made, not to mention the trade size, coil size and your intended application.

The best way to determine how much it will cost you to purchase a metal flexible conduit is to identify which you need. Once you’ve decided, drop us an email at sales@flex-it.co.uk outlining your specific requirements and our team will get back to you with a tailored quote.

If you’re not sure which metallic conduit you should choose, or which suits your application best, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will do everything we can to help.

Typically, metal flexible conduits are used in commercial buildings or where it’s not possible to use a rigid conduit. They provide strength and protection, as well as excellent flexibility.

Flexible metal conduits are mostly manufactured from steel by coiling a self-interlocked or square-locked ribbed strip of the metal which, in turn, forms a tube. To protect them against internal and external damage, wires are simply pulled through this tube.

The fact that this tubing is flexible means that it can bend to fit your application – as opposed to rigid conduits that need bending manually.

Metallic conduits like the ones we supply at Flex-It can change their shape as you install them and as and when repairs or alterations are required.

The simple answer is yes! Flexible conduits provide an inherent mechanical barrier for cables and protect people, property, and processes.

Though primarily used in dry applications, metallic conduits can be used in most of the same places as rigid conduits.

Some metal flexible conduits even have a UV resistant polymer that makes them watertight. So providing the appropriate liquid-tight fittings are used, they can be used in wet conditions as well.

What’s more, all conduits offer fire protection to a certain extent – whether it be to prevent the spread of flames and heat, shielding your wires from accidental fire damage, or fireproofing.

Here at Flex-It, we make sure that our metal flexible conduits are manufactured to the highest industry standard and will be more than happy to advise you on the most suitable (and safest) conduits for your requirements.
